Geno is not the man

What was it with the red zone interceptions? Tbf, that’s also been an issue for Purdy, who has turned more to either giving the ball to a rb or running it in himself.

Geno has his limitations but he is far from the problem IMO.
He is just one of many problems. Our Oline is not good. Our Dline is not good. Focus on the field is not good, and that's a coaching issue. Our Offensive play calling is not good. Grubb needs to realize that running up the gut on 4th and one is not going to work with this group. As I noted in the other post, our talent level is the real problem.

While this is all true, we would have won were it not for the red zone ints. And ints are a qb stat.

In our case they are also partly on the Oline. Give Geno time and he will likely not throw so many ints. Still don't like that he makes bad decisions when under pressure. But I also put some blame on Grubb. He should call more short passes. Don't call screens into the middle where our Oline is more likely to get swamped creating a traffic jam. And we are not a power running team and are unlikely to get even a yard up the middle when they stack the box.

Ints, mental errors and lack of talent to overcome those make it difficult to win. We could have beat the 9ers, if not for a few bad decisions. We could have been at least competitive with the Bills if not for a few bad decisions/moments (not sure how to categorize snapping the ball over Geno's head and stepping on his foot? Mental? Just bad luck?) And we would have beat the Rams if not for the same. All of that is on the players and coaches.

I don't think it's a mental issue, at least in the sense of Geno becomes unplayable mentally or unstable. He doesn't shrivel up in tough situations, he literally drove us down for a tying score and then once again in overtime where we should have scored. Like, that seems pretty damn mentally tough.

What I see is a failure in the redzone that heightens the failure of both play-calling and talent. It seems our playbook is full of long developing plays where Geno has to go through progressions. Even on the pick that wasn't returned, you had Lockett looking back as if he was an option. If Lockett blocks someone instead of being an option, we likely get that play done.

Our receivers also have really poor instincts or routes in the redzone. On the pick six you have a guy open to the left but Geno's progression is R->L even though that left option would have only been open the first few seconds of the play. Instead Geno's first read is in a place littered with defenders. Geno eventually short arms a horrible pass that is ran back.

And how often do we find ourselves in 3rd and long in the RZ? Geno is not Tom Brady, he's a average to slightly above average QB. He's not making insane plays, we need better tempo, timing, and fewer multi-option plays. Instead focusing on one key receiver and throwing every block at getting him open.

So speaking of the 49ers, they’ve been missing key starters on both sides of the ball, but are still 4-4 with five rookies stepping in. They picked next to last in the draft and didn’t do much other than exchange some day 3 picks.

The game-wrecking pick 6 is a QB stat. However it doesn't happen with almost any other RB in the NFL on the field other than Walker. If he stays in the pocket and blocks it doesn't happen. If he runs a route it doesn't happen. If he sprints to the goal post and humps the protective cladding it doesn't happen. Instead he jogs out of the backfield keeping the LT and pass rusher between him and the QB so he can't be a target. He allows 1 defender to cover him, cover a potential QB scramble, and cover a zone in the endzone. He couldn't do anything f***ing worse if he tried. He's halfway through his 3rd season and he doesn't know what to do or what not to do. smh.

I like Geno and really want him to succeed but I don’t think he’s the guy that’s going to take you to that next level. Need to draft a QB of the future, one that senses pressure quickly and can extend plays with his legs.

Like others have said both lines suck as well, LB’s suck and DB’s are playing stupid football. Grubb is starting to be on my shit list as well. No excuse for not getting 1 yard in 2 plays in OT. Plays were telegraphed by the formation.

Get Me3 back?

Russell would absolutely crumble in this offense. Geno needs one more second in the pocket and things look completely different.

Ints and red zone ints, in particular, can’t be fixed with one extra second alone. Those who say it’s a multi unit failure including Geno are right, and maybe especially Geno in the red zone. He has dk, Jsn and Lockett and if he can’t pass to them perhaps he should be handing off to a runner whom said receivers block for.
