So, do we let Geno enter his contact year without an extension? Or do we get one done for say 35m for two more years?

I keep going back and forth on this myself.

No reason to give Smith any guarantees and Smith isn't going to sign an extension without any guarantees. Smith is the default QB in 2025 if the Seahawks can't get a better option. You don't need a fallback position for 2026.

I think you have to bring him back, there’s really no good affordable option out there. And I’m not into the idea of breaking the bank for average ass Sam Darnold when we got the same here with Geno.

Maybe get him an OC that knows how to layer a play action game or has an actual strategy or go to move to run the ball. Also cut the shit out that screens are an extension of the run game, it’s not and it’s stupid that people think it is. You can’t replicate the physicality that a run game brings any other way than running the god damn ball and wearing out the opponent.

If we don’t re-sign Geno, what are our 2026 alternatives? Howell ain’t it.

Your alternatives will be the same as for a third of the league. If you don't have a top 12 QB under the age of 32 you're looking for an alternative to come in before 2026. The Dolphins, Jets, Steelers, Browns, Colts, Texans, Raiders, Giants, Buccaneers, Saints, and Panthers aren't set for 2026. The Eagles, Cowboys, Rams, Jaguars, and Lions will at least be thinking about a future starting QB. Some of the 2024 rookie QB class might have poor 2nd seasons. Other QBs will suffer injuries and their teams will be thinking about alternatives. It's way too far off to predict or be concerned about.

The Seahawks could use another receiver, RB, and 3 OL for 2025. That should be a higher priority.

Either way, I hope they bring in a qb2 that can actually win games—like mason rudolph or Cooper Rush. That goes double if we decide not to extend Geno.

If that’s the decision now, then we are looking at a 2026 version of the Saints snapping up Carr or the Raiders getting JimmyG.

Have we seen Geno's ceiling? If we keep Geno, but don't upgrade the Oline, we'll see this same level next year. If we dump Geno and don't upgrade the Oline it will be worse.

How about we upgrade the Oline? Amongst you football nerds, who is going to be available either through trade or the draft next year?

Ummm he’s under contract until 2026, we don’t have to tag him at all

I am talking about a tag from 2026-27, which would be the only way other than an extension to keep him here. The value of a tag hits the cap that year, unlike extensions in which cap is deferred via signing bonuses.

Overthecap projected the 2025 QB franchise tag at $41M+. Realistically the 2026 tag will be about 10% higher. Tagging Smith wouldn't be impossible, but unless you see him as a top 10 QB it would be a desperation move that would hamper the team's ability to add other quality players. It's a discussion for late 2025.

Anyone you bring in 2026 will likely be more expensive and likely worse than 9-8 year after year. We could be 10-7 this year. The past two years, we have lost playoffs because of tiebreakers. Locking him in for 2026 and 2027 at 70m, 50 m guaranteed is less than the 50m aav that Brock Purdy will probably get per year.

I wouldn't guarantee Smith $28M +/- $3M* for 2025 and the bulk of a prospective $35M for 2026, even with an option at $35M for 2027. I don't think he's a likely top 12 QB. Good teams with sensible GMs don't lock themselves into mediocre, or worse, QBs for 2+ years. Teams that do, such as the Jets, Giants, Browns, etc, underachieve and fire those GMs. There is a big gap in pay between the top 16-18 QBs and the QBs outside the top 22. There is a reason why Smith is in that gap. Let's put it this way - if any other team was willing to pay Smith circa $35M they would have traded for his $22.5M contract before May 2024. There is no need, or financial benefit, in rushing into an extension. It would make sense to wait and see what the market is like for Darnold and Dan Jones. That will better indicate what Smith is worth.

* Smith is due $25M in 2025 but he has 3 performance escalators he could achieve in Week 18. Each target met would raise his non-guaranteed base salary by $2M.

I suspect they either cut or let him play out his final year. If they cut and go with Howell next year that should guarantee a top 3 pick the following year.

You’re talking about his escalators for the 2024 season, right? Because they aren’t dependent on week. And frankly the contract you propose is a way better bargain now than a year from now in which Geno again achieves 10 wins but the Niners with their 4th place schedule have 13. Most of the league does far worse than Geno while paying ridiculous contracts.

If we do punt to 2026, we need an upgrade from Howell, like Cooper Rush or Mason Rudolph.

The season-long performance escalators also apply to 2025. He is on course for the completion % target. He needs about 190 yards for the yardage target. He needs 1 more team win for the 10 wins target. I suspect he will achieve all 3 targets and his base salary for 2025 will be raised to $31M. The contract isn't guaranteed and the Seahawks could decide to release him without further negotiations.

If we're playing guess who will be the better QB in 2026 I would take Howell over Rush or Rudolph, but there's no reason to commit to any QB option at this point.
