Seahawks acquire QB Sam Howell

Why not just draft a QB?

He's like the same age as the QBs coming out this year, essentially, but with two years of experience in the pros. Which means he's more adjusted to the game and the FO has had plenty of chances to see how he can perform at this level.

I don't love moving back in the draft like that, but he's a much safer bet as a backup (which realistically we'll probably need at some point during the season) than a rookie would be. And if he happens to show out when he has the opportunity he could be moved next offseason to a team that needs a QB or maybe, possibly, we could be looking at a potential QBOTF situation, best (however unlikely) case scenario.

He's basically Drew Lock but way cheaper. And though it does cost us a bit of draft capital, at least there's no urgency to use one of our picks on a QB now.

I like this trade. Howell is just 23 years old but has 3 years of NFL experience under his belt. John Schneider, who has a good eye for quarterbacks, has had his eye on Howell for quite some time. Swapping a 3rd for a 4th and a 5th for a 6th is rather meaningless vs. a 1st for a 2nd swap. We've landed a viable QB prospect who has JS's seal of approval and preserved our most valuable draft capital assets that can now be used for the best player available, trading back, etc. And at $1M a year, he's substantially cheaper than someone like Drew Lock.

IMO Howell has just as good of a chance of becoming our QBOTF as would burning a #16 overall on someone like Penix or Nix. This is a low risk, high reward trade.
