I see no downside in signing him as the qb4 for camp. We’ve got dozens of free agents that need a qb to throw to them to evaluate them for if not roster then ps. There is work enough in camp for four qbs.

Plus, they may be surprised. Adrian was called the “Lamar Jackson” of ufl for his mobility, that’s worth looking at. Maybe he provides a surprise factor that Howell and Walker do not. Maybe that’s worth letting Walker walk. You won’t know till you try.

The 49ers have guaranteed Josh Dobbs 2.25M. Brandon Allen is guaranteed 700k. With that sunk cost they’d be the last team to sign a udfa developmental, but they did in Tanner Mordechai. Their sports media is reporting that Mordechai might beat out either Dobbs or Allen, just as Purdy beat out Sudfeld and his 2m guaranteed.

They’re keeping their options open, and so should we.

QB4 is the guy you want to be just good enough to be your emergency signing QB3 if/when someone gets hurt, but not good enough to be someone else's full-time QB3.

They got an ol instead, but I commend them on checking Martinez out. Frankly, I wish we would have acquired him as our third even though I like pj walker. Our coaches need the experience of coaching a rookie qb more than we need insurance in having a qb3 with starting experience. Because we are not expected to be contenders.

Every time the 9ers did a conventional qb selection, they failed. Jimmy fell into their laps as a backup. Brock Purdy was a third stringer. Had they gone with Mr reliable but mid Geno, with the backups failed products from other teams. I’d expect the 7-10 result that oddsmakers predict. That will include a sweep by the Niners and likely the rams.

I mean flv2, look at your team. The rams. You guys spent a draft pick on Stetson Bennett who nfi the whole year for his mental. And the reason he’s still here is because McVay does not see JimmyG as a long term plan whereas Stetson could be.

The hawks needed this year with a qb3 developmental, which Adrian is, to give them practice on evaluating 2025 even if Adrian wasn’t in the plans. It’s a brand new coaching staff, this year likely won’t matter nd we could have learned something.

But no. Geno will persuade them we just need an ol or whatever until he gets a concussion and Howell goes out there being Howell…

The Rams QB2 and QB3 situation under McVay has been a clown show. Mannion very clearly wasn't it. Wolford was a way below average QB2. Perkins never had the physical attributes to be an NFL QB so he couldn't be developed from a project to a QB1, nor was he a veteran QB2. He was a total waste of a roster spot for 2 seasons. Rypien was a failed project who was obviously going to fail as QB2. Bennett was the 1st real stab at a rookie QB in 7 seasons and he's been a failure. He wasn't with the team through 2023. He is the presumptive QB2 for the 1st 2 games, but that's about a 65% chance vs Winn or TBD. The chances of him being on the active roster for Week 3 are around 10%. If he makes it to the Rams PS so be it. Almost no chance he's with the Rams beyond 2024.

I really liked Howell as a potential Rams QB2. Apparently so did the Rams. The Seahawks liked him more. I would have like Walker as QB3 ahead of Bennett or Winn but whatever. I would have liked a rookie as a developmental project QB3 with Walker as QB4 even more. meh.

I wasn’t aware Winn was still there. He was a practice squadder on the cfl vs Martinez who won ufl mvp. It would make more sense to have Martinez vs Bennett for the qb3 competition for the reasons I outlined above. Whoever the qb3 is will be on the active roster immediately as JimmyG is suspended, and while Stafford got more guaranteed money, he’s had an ample injury history himself. The qb3 could actually start, making that selection of immediate importance.

I could understand Martinez, but this guy quarterbacked the next to worst team in the ufl this year. Plus the 9ers already have four quarterbacks. Even in camp how many reps is a 5th stringer going to get?

The only reason I can think of is that maybe their rookie udfa might get let go, but in that case why not Martinez, who won the ufl mvp?

Having a QB5 is 4D chess I hope Holmgren and Ruskell are paying attention!

While I agree the 9ers latest move makes no sense, it’s also true that they’ve had more success at developing their reserve qbs than any other team. That’s why they went to two Super Bowls and we did not.

Nothing to do with having a great offensive system or defense, all about that QB8

Again, these moves cost nothing. If they can develop a future QB2 out of a QB4 or QB5 then fine. Save a few million. Just don't waste too much time or effort.

I printed this post out and put it on the fridge.

The 9ers are where they are because of their backup quarterback decisions. Purdy was the second third stringer in five years to start. The first was Nick Mullens over cj beathard, who himself paid off with the Purdy comp pick. If they had been as conservative as the Hawks, none of that happens.

There’s no reason for a team to keep a qb3 unless he was drafted high, like Zach Wilson. Poachability risk for a fourth rounder who wouldn’t even show up for a year is low. So, while Stetson is certainly released to ps by Week 3 as you said, the plan probably is then to bring him up every time as the emergency qb, meaning they just pay him the game check without sacrificing a roster spot.

Salah has now said he doesn’t plan to put Rodgers into preseason games, which explains Adrian’s signing.
